Hair Tips and Tricks

Teasing Tips:
-Use a plastic comb (NOT wide-toothed!) rather than a regular hairbrush, boar bristle brush, etc.
-Use an aerosol hairspray since non-aerosol sprays tend to be a bit sticky, and spray it all over your top layers. Some hairsprays I really love are Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play Harder and Tigi Bed Head Hard Head.
-Separate a piece of your hair, and backcomb it from every direction except the top, then spray it.
-Use a volumizing spray or mousse before blow drying your hair. A really good (and affordable!) one is TRESemme’s 24 Hr Body Mousse.
-Blow dry your hair upside down before straightening and teasing for added volume.
Dye Tips:
-Unless you have very short or thin hair, dye your hair IN SECTIONS. Don’t try to do it all at once, you will inevitably miss spots.
-If you’re using a demi-permanent colored dye, leave it on much longer than the directions say too. It will make the color more intense and it will last longer. For even better results, apply your dye, then put on a shower cap and blow dry it-the heat will make your hair absorb color faster, while the shower cap prevents hair from drying. Some of my favorite dyes are Manic Panic Color Creams and Beyond the Zone Color Jamz.
-Before applying a colored dye, bleach your hair (if it’s not already blonde) to a light blonde or even white blonde for better results. Also, use the lowest volume bleach you can find. All bleaching will damage your hair, but lower volumes are less damaging (however, they do take longer to develop).
Damaged Hair Tips (because after all that dying and teasing, your hair will have some damage):
-Before using any heat appliance (straightener, blow dryer, etc), apply a heat protectant to your hair. Some of my favorites are Redken Extreme Iron Repair and Biosilk. All heat styling is damaging, but applying a protective product will lessen the damage.
-Don’t wash your hair every day, shampoos can be very harsh and cause damage to your hair. If you tend to have oily hair or lose volume after a day, try using dry shampoo. I think the absolute best one on the market is Klorane’s aerosol dry shampoo.
-Use conditioner…a lot! Some of my favorites are Garnier’s Triple Nutrition, Dove’s Daily Moisture, and Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle. And don’t apply it to your roots! It will cause your hair to have less volume, and if you do it long enough, your roots will have a dramatically different texture than your ends, and then when you dye your hair, the color will absorb differently, and your ends will be darker than the rest of your hair.
-If you don’t have to style your hair, don’t style it! For days when you’re bumming it at home, wash and condition your hair, then let it air dry.
-Know that NO PRODUCT can really repair damaged hair. Once the damage is done, it is irreversible. Even though hair products can’t actually rebuild your hair, there are a lot that can help prevent further damage, and can help you keep the current damage manageable.
-Buy some satin or silk pillowcases. Cotton pillowcases can rough up hair cuticles, causing damage and split ends.
-Use a wide toothed comb rather than a brush when your hair is wet. Hair is weaker when it’s wet, and taking a brush to it when it’s so vulnerable will cause breakage. If you have very thick or long hair (like me) and absolutely have to use a brush, let your hair air dry for as long as possible, then brush through it.
-DO NOT towel dry your hair! So many hair products say to do this in their directions, but it’s SO bad for your hair! Doing it will roughen your hair cuticles, causing breakage and damage. If you need to get excess water out, just gently squeeze a towel around sections of your hair.
