Get the "simple scene" look
If there's one thing people need to know it's that - you can't become extreme scene over night, especially on your first try!! So, hopefully I can provide some helpful tips on how to get started.
1. Scene hair! As you may very well know, just about every scene kid can be recognized because of their bitchin' hair! && Here are some things you can do to make your hair a little more scene.
Choppy layers- In order to do this, you will need hair cutting scissors and maybe hair ties or clips.
Most people choose to do this themselves or with a parent / friend. It's an easy look to achieve and easy to pull off. How to do it-
- Section your hair into multiple layers. You can group each layer with hair ties or clips.
- Take out a section and cut random lengths in random places. However, you should try to keep them similar in length, as this is one layer! And try to put the cut at a diagonal slant!
- REPEAT SECOND STEP UNTIL ALL SECTIONS/LAYERS ARE COMPLETE!
Multiple colors / streaks- For this one you will need hair ties / clips, hair dye / bleach, and optionally a parent or professional! How to -
- Take out the section[s] or strips of hair you'd like to change.
- Tie / clip / move the hair you don't want colored!!
- Apply the dye or bleach to the parts you're coloring.
- Wait the instructed amount of time.
[remember to keep your hair seperated - what you want colored and what you dont]
- Wash it out!
Sideswept bangs- Perhaps the easiest of all. In this case you'll need hair cutting scissors [or maybe not!]. How to do it!
- If you've already got bangs they should be at least half as long as your face!
- One way is to TRIM them at a low diagonal angle from one side to the other.
- Then brush and push them aside. [may take some training for your bangs before they're perfect].
- Or cut at a high diagonal angle from one side to the other.
Teasing- This will, without a doubt, take some time to achieve / perfect! You most likely wont get it right away, but practice! You'll need a teasing comb, hairspray, and optionally a flat iron. How I do it-
- Flat iron / straighten your hair first [OPTIONAL]
- Move the first layer out of the way with a clip or hair tie.
[Some people choose to leave out the bottom layer[s] as well or just instead]
-Backcomb the hair you've left out. [There are many helpful articles on this site and youtube videos to teach you this technique!]
- Hairspray what's been teased [You should use a lot of hairspray ;D]
- Flat iron what's been teased [OPTIONAL]
- If you left out the top layer you can backcomb the underneat of that layer or you can brush / comb it over the top of what's been teased.
2. Make up! Also key when it comes to the scene look. Unless, of course, you are a guy then make up isn't very much of a necessity but it's optional.
Good advice - Stick to a theme. Meaning don't have black eyeliner, black eyeshadow, then bright pink lipstick!!
Eyeliner- I list this first because most people concider it a necessity, while most else isn't. Liquid is most popular, but also more difficult to use and more expensive. Most scene girls like to keep their eyeliner thick and very noticable. Some people call this "raccoon eyes". Good advice - dont forget the inner part of the bottom eyelid!!!
Foundation- It's more popular to keep this as light toned as possible. [Face powder helps lighten your skin tone as well]. If you're using liquid foundation you will apply it to all parts of your face using a make up sponge. Powder foundation / dry foundation you will most likely use a brush to apply it.
Eyeshadow- Popular looks are to use bright and crazy colors - lime green, electric blue, hot pink, yellow, etc. Another commonly used eyeshadow is black. And a lot of girls when using black like to go for the "smokey eye" effect. [There are many helpful articles on this site and youtube videos to teach you this technique!]
Lipgloss / lipstick- Most girls choose to keep their lips nude, or at least looking so. You can use any shade, color, or type you choose, OF COURSE!! But keep to your theme.
&& whatever else you choose to add.
3. CLOTHES!!! Everybody wears clothes and has a style. Scene kids are famous for their bright colors and wacky attires! Here's a list of some easy to find - somewhat cheap articles of clothing that are associated to the scene style!
Skinny jeans!- Get 'em as tight as you can fit 'em![;
Band tee's- Pick bands you're familiar with!
Tutu's- Make 'em poofy, like your hair!
High tops- These are shoes, if you didn't know that.
Converse- Shoes, also. Can be high tops or w.e
Plaid- I'm sure you know what "plaid" is. Button up, plaid tops are VERY popular to scene kids.
BRIGHT CRAZY COLORS!!!- Unless this is not the look you wish to achieve. Dark colors are very attractive as well.
4. Accessories!! This is where you can get the most creative, crazy, and fun! Because nothing HAS to match, but can, that's optional. And you can never have too many accessories!! Here are some good ones:
Arm bands- Bracelets, bangles, sweatt bands, studded arm bands! These are becoming more and more popular as the day passes!! Home made beaded jewelry is very common and very cute! Make, have, and keep a lot of these! Braided bracelets are great to have, as well. Make them colorful!!
Hair bows / hair clips- Also extremely common in the scene style. Big, little, skinny, fat, printed, plain, colorful!! It doesn't even matter!
Barretts- Not sure if I spelled that right. But they're usually worn clipped to your bangs!
Beanies- Worn on your head, lol. Long / loose ones are very popular and most attractive.
Piercings!- Uh ooh!! Don't worry, fake ones can be very tasteful if you can wear them correctly!! Facial piercings are highly popular in scene fashion. Most people start with a nose piercing or lip ring. Then work their way up to snake bites, angel bites, septum, dimples, bridge piercing, ETC. They can be very tasteful and also highly frowned apon, good thing they come out more easily than they go in!
5. Pictures. I know this is irrelevant to the STYLE of a scene kid, but it's important, so I thought I'd throw in some important tips, suggestions, and thoughts about your camera and the scene community!!
Things to concider when taking your picture-
Angle
Lighting
Expression
&& Pose
Check out some popular pictures on Scenequeens.com, photobucket, google, etc. To get an idea of what you'd like your picture to look like, remember the important keys listed above, then go for it! But don't be a copy of somebody else's photo!!
NOT EVERYBODY HAS A HIGH QUALITY CAMERA- && THAT'S OKAY! Because even with a crappy camera you can get some great pictures!! Just make sure you keep in mind the four important factors to getting your picture looking great!
Photoshop / Paint.net / Gimp- && Any other photo editor are commonly used. Some people can't afford it, some can't figure them out, and some people just don't like them! Well, lucky for those people it's not required. In fact, some of the best pictures I've seen were completely unedited.
Well, I hope this has been of some help![:
